Whiskeytown Lake
Filed in Blog, Daily Image
For the first time since we moved, I took the bike down to Redding today. I stopped and looked at the lake, and all the smoke rising off the hillside. It’s still beautiful, but it’s not a clear view.

The mountain that’s on fire is Shasta Bally. (Bally is apparently a Wintu word for ‘mountain’.) I’ve been to the top once; my uncle was into four-wheel drive vehicles for a while. We poked around the transmission station up there. It doesn’t surprise me the thing is on fire, it was covered in manzanita even then.
The trip was meaningful for one other reason. My uncle pointed out that triangular shaped peak downrange of us, and told me what its name was. (Bully Shoop, if you’re curious.) I somehow remembered it, which caused my group in PE to win the championship. (Yes, it was one of those rare cases in which brains won the day instead of brawn.)
