Shrinking
Filed in BlogSome people are born to program. I wasn’t. Now, I’m a lot better than I used to be, and I’m rather handy with PHP–but I’ve never had any formal training. And I can tell.
A couple of days ago I started a “onehelluva” project. You know–the kind that I’ll come to regret. But it has to be done.
I’m creating a manual of Markeroni. Why? Firstly, because I figure that one day I might actually want to get in some help. Or sell the site. Or something. And it would be nice to hand someone the book and say “Here’s how you run Markeroni.” And secondly, because it’s about time.
I did something scary today. I had Don figure out how many separate PHP files there were on the site. The answer? 1904.
Of course, that’s unsustainable. And it’s a direct result of my not knowing what I was doing, of being a very novice programmer when I started, and instead of consolidating programs that do similar tasks, writing one for every task.
So, now I’m inventorying everything that I have, and starting to write programs that will suck in dozens of little individual programs and make them one.
But…whoah.
I’m trying not to think about it too much. ;)
