When I’m on the road, I find it harder to settle into work, even if we do find connectivity along the way. I need a longer solid stretch at it, at least a couple of hours, to do anything that looks and feels useful. This is a good thing to know about myself, since it will have some bearing on our longer road trips in the far future. So now that I’m home, it’s catchup time.

Snow had fallen while we were away–the first batch of the winter. It looked gorgeous up there on the Trinity Alps with the low clouds wrapping round their waists.
We were glad to be home.

Every time I go past here, I smile. I think of rivers made of Jell-o flowing with cream, like some of the tastier stories from my childhood. I gather that there used to be a settlement called Jelly here. :)

This old school (circa 1913) in Woodland, California was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It might have been only in the nick of time; the place is hidden behind tall fences, with an air of neglect about it. And yet a school with stained glass windows and little cherubs clinging to the main door has to be worth something.
I hope that some day Woodland finds the money to restore this place and turn it into something full of art and light.

We weren’t the only ones heading south. This was part of an enormous flock of birds on their way somewhere else. The sky was black with them for a while.

Magic moments.
In Cost Plus World Market, in search of the elusive golden syrup (nope, but I did find mince pies, so my Christmas needs are met.)
Staff member #1 leans over staff member #2, who’s checking me out: “Obama won.”
Oh YEAH. It’s ABOUT TIME.

When I heard that snow was coming to about 3500′, I knew that we had to get down the mountain even though it was pouring with rain. So we got ready, and watched the radar. There was a slight gap followed by a vast blob of rain and an equally vast blob of frozen rain.
But we made it. :)

I was up early, the air was crisp and clean, and I went for a walk. Before I knew it, I was in the National Forest, noticing things like raindrops on the trees.

Oh look! It’s Sunday again. And November! Gee, November. It came in with a BANG–three inches of rain on Hallowe’en, and several more since. Today we made a mad dash down to the post office to pick up our mail, and only got sprinkled on a little. I went out for a walk in the morning and took pictures of sparkly droplets hanging off pine trees.
Speaking of pines, they are rapidly shedding everything they possibly can. The cats don’t like the sound of the rain on the roof, but they like the frequent thuds of dropping pine cones even less. And the needles continue to fall and make a wet, slippery carpet. (more…)

So much rain fell that puddles formed. This is no mean feat, since the ground is sandy and seems to suck moisture dry.
It was quite something.
