NaNoWriMo 2008
Filed in BlogI’ve been wavering back and forth about doing NaNoWriMo again this year. It would make it a hat trick, of course, but right now I’m not in fiction mode. I don’t even have a whisper of an idea for a plot (not that last year’s story had much of one either, it must be said). And I also feel that the lack of a community around me will make it harder: I am sad that I can’t attend tonight’s launching Write-In down in Santa Clara.
I did, however, notice that this year there’s a forum called “NaNo Rebels” for those who don’t write a novel, but instead write non-fiction, screen plays, or the like. And that gave me a glimmer of a thought.
I do not need to prove that I can write a novel, or that I can write a novel in November. In fact, I’ve now written three and a half novels (the half being the unfinished sequel to Rhaeva–a fantasy novel who’s gone off fantasy is unlikely to write the rest of the series, formula or no formula). I quite patently don’t need to prove that I can write a novel (or the usual 50,000 words of drivel that is my NaNoWriMo).
Yet I still feel pulled towards the idea of participation this year, if only to find out if it’s more fun than last year, which wasn’t fun, whereas year 1 was great fun.
So here’s what I’m thinking. What I need to do in November is to get this rewrite of Markeroni’s logging landmarks functions off my plate. And what I need to do is get a handle on Markeroni so that I can grow it into something that will still be around and cool in ten year’s, twenty, thirty years’ time.
So what if I combine the two? Find a way to cast myself (or someone) as a character in a “novel” that is primarily a mind-dump of what I’m thinking, doing, and planning regarding the website? I often write to think. I don’t imagine it would be something that anyone else would ever be interested in reading; but it might kill two birds with one stone and let me participate. There might be a blog post or two in it, at least.
So….is anyone else taking part this year?
:: grumble :: Someone hit me with a nerf bat. This is crazy.

I am participating again even though I’m also well beyond the needing to prove I can write 50,000 works in a month. I’m writing a sequel to last year’s nano and I’m posting all my mind-dumps on my livejournal site. They are just to disorganized for my main blog.

There’s no way I can manage it (again) this year, but I’m trying for NaBloPoMo.

Well, I’m trying it again this year. It’ll be my 4th try, I think….and I’ve hit 50,000 the last two years. (gosh. can that be right?)
Anyway, I have no idea how I’ll do it, but I DO have a story idea. And I like it. So that’s a good start. Plus, I just got fired, so I’ll have plenty of time to write, at least until I find a job. Right?

If you’re not enjoying it, and you don’t need to do it, then what’s the point? :)

Looks like you are getting right ahead with it. Mine is proving outright weird, but I’m finding it productive, at least.

How’s it going, Buffra?

Because every time I do it something really good comes out of it creatively, so it’s worth the trouble.

Why do I do it… because I can. I am actually enjoying it but it has long since lost the feelings of dread over reaching 50K in such a short time.
I’ll be hitting 15K tonight. My goal is to be finished by Thanksgiving. My computer screen is broken on my lap top and I don’t want to be writing on my son’s computer because he can read now and some of my scenes aren’t suitable for a person his age.

Heh.
Something about job-hunting and being in school and all that means….um….so far, it isn’t really going. At all. But tomorrow is a full-on writing day. At least, that’s the plan!
Well, and I should do some job apps.
*sigh*
