Just $700

Filed in Blog

I’m told, by my credit card company, that if I spend “just $700″ in January or February, using their card, they’ll send me a gift certificate for a store which, admittedly, I do use.

But it’s the “just $700″ part that sticks in my craw. The two words do not belong together, period. $700 is a lot of money unless you are stinking rich. I know that many people in the USA are stinking rich, but many, many more are not.

Since when did it get to be okay to dismiss large sums of money in this way, to insidiously tempt a person to spend, spend, spend? I wouldn’t object to “just $5″ or even “just $10″ if the item in question happened to be a good value. But beyond that, it gets expensive. Beyond that, I have to think twice, thrice and even four times whether it is worth the money.

I could put my next month’s space rent on this credit card and get my gift certificate…but I’m inclined, instead, to use my standard card and get some more air miles, and now for more reasons than one.
