A wall of chocolate

Filed in Blog

Do you recall how, a couple of weeks ago, I committed to not eating “added” sugar, mostly thinking of soda, cakes, candy, dessert–that sort of thing? Well, I am starting to hit a wall. ;)

Somewhere in the blogosphere I read a meme which asked “What things are you unwilling to do without for the rest of your life?” I guess chocolate is going to end up being one of mine. It started yesterday, really, when I noticed that the gas station was selling mint-flavored Three Musketeers bars. Mint. And chocolate. Oh my.

I’ve been craving chocolate ever since.

That’s why most deprivation-based diets fail so dismally, of course. What you can’t have, you want. In fact you don’t just want them a little bit. You wantwantwantwantitNOW! The trouble with sugar, of course, is that it’s so addicting, and so very insidious and bad for you. And since I haven’t been 100% successful with the weaning-off–I’ve slurped a few half-cans of sugary soda–it’s very hard to get that naughty little inner voice to shut up and quit telling me to eat one of those mint musketeers with their crunchy little minty legs and hats…whoops, where was I?

Of course, I could just change the rules and restrict myself to having some special chocolate–the good stuff, the gourmet, expensive, high quality stuff–or some ice cream. Nobody’s paying me a million bucks to do this (unless you’re offering?) But I promised to do this sugar-free thing until the September solstice, and unless I do that I won’t know how it will feel to wean off sugar. I won’t know how it will feel after that, whether the cravings will go away or just keep coming back in waves. So, I bought Snapeas instead.

But I still wantwantwantwantWANTitnow! ;)

I did without sugar for ten years as part of eating disorder recovery. It was amazing how fast that, when I thought my life depended on it, I could just make it be not-food-for-me, the way cilantro or pork aren’t food for me now. It wasn’t gross or evil, it was just wasn’t something I ate. If that’s really what you need, I hope it works out as well.

If not? You’ll figure it out. :)

Now that I have to monitor my blood glucose, I’ve pretty much given up sweets and sodas, but I have made an exception for my chocolate Brown Cow nonfat yogurt, and the occasional Eskimo Pie if my after-dinner levels are favorable. Oh, and I do eat the occasional Clif Builder’s bar, as it has 20g of protein, which is good for a mid-morning out.

Anyway, I hope the next few months aren’t too rough on you. I for one have been craving doughnuts and shrimp spring rolls ever since my diagnosis, and it makes me nuts every time I do the grocery shopping.

Mary: it pretty much ensued from my embarrassing myself with one sugar high too many. I’ll give this a shot, and then see if I can control it, or whether it still controls me. That’ll allow me to figure out what I need in the future. But for now…more or less cold turkey.

Oddly, writing about it has helped calmed down the cravings. :)

Marina: Now, that puts it all into perspective. *hugs*

I find, this morning, that I don’t feel quite so cravey. Apparently writing abou it has helped.
