I’m going to pretend that I’m online, because really I should be. I came into Weaverville this morning thinking that I had wireless set up on this Linux laptop, but alas, it was not to be. So right now I’m enjoying a coffee and typing in the expectation that this will get posted sooner or later.

I’m home, you understand. The air is as clear as glass and the mountains sharp against the blue. It’s the last swan song of the season before snow, wind and rain take over. Already I realize that I’m going to need warmer clothing. A couple of sweaters, some thermal glove liners, and extra woolly socks. I’ll look like Michelin Man, but it’s just how things used to be when I used to ride in England, and I’d rather be warm than stylish. (Who am I trying to kid? I don’t know how to do stylish.)

This morning a flock of quail was beeping its way quite delightfully over our pile of firewood. Earlier in the week Kerry invited us over along with Ed and Tina and we plotted a Bonfire Night festivity to use up the year’s deadwood sweepings. The ground is now covered in slippery pine needles, and one of my first tasks upon arrival was to sweep those aside so they wouldn’t drag our bikes over.

We went to pick up mail on, I think, Thursday. Oh Boy. They hauled out an entire bucket of mail. I have never had my mail in a bucket before…blush blush blush! Luckily there are only a couple of minor fires to put out and while the laundry ran I went through the lot and started to sort. By the end of today everything will be dealt with, and all will be cool. Too bad I didn’t have a camera with me!

We are now a two bike family! I rode Don’s monster the whole way home and amused numerous people with my lack of a seat. But replacing the seat with jeans allowed me to get my feet down, making for an infinitely safer ride. It wasn’t too uncomfortable, but then, we did split the trip into three days.

The satellite equipment we bought on the way up does not work. My task this morning was to see if I won the Ebay auction for a new modem that I bid on last night. I guess I’m going to need another trip into town to find out(*). Our own modem conked out when the tripod blew over in the gales a week or so back, so we have nothing that works enough to figure out what the problem is. So right now we’re relying on a hour or so of wireless per day, and meanwhile a bunch of other things are getting fixed, and I guess the rest of the world can wait a day or so. *grin*

(*) No.

… Well, you thought it might be productive to have less computer time daily. Maybe the universe was listening for once!

I reckon the stylish ones would give an arm and a leg to be able to whip off a blog post like you do. :)

*grin* You’re dead right, though I was thinking more like 8-10 hours instead of 16 ;)
